Highlights of the Ministry of Labour’s monthly report to the Provincial Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee include the following:
There were two deaths in the construction sector in the month of June. One occurred in the western region where a 34 year old worker working in sewer and watermain construction was struck by a loader. The other involved a 24 year old worker working in bridge construction in the north region who was thrown out of a man lift/boom truck approximately 45 feet landing in a river
There were 14 criticals in the month of June; 11 were fall related and three were “struck by”
The tower crane blitz in the GTA and Niagara will continue until the end of the summer season
In August there will be a blitz on access equipment including elevated work platforms, scaffolds, suspended work platforms and ladders
Two new safety videos are available on the MoL website: 1) trench excavation safety; 2) tower crane safety
Be sure that ladders are used appropriately and safely on job sites
